About 77 Maitland Place — Celebrity Place
We’re not quite sure if any bona fide celebrities live at 77 Maitland Place — but in a city like Toronto, anything is possible. Regardless, the building wasn’t named for its inhabitants, but rather for Celebrity Club, a former occupant of the lot.
Built in 1985 by Danand Investments Limited, Celebrity Place is home to enough units that a wide variety of residents can call the building home: the two 19-storey towers are filled with 382 suites. One immediate clue that reveals the longer lifespan of 77 Maitland is its façade. The hefty red brick edifice is rather different from the sleek glass condos cropping up all over the city today.
The two octagon-esque towers of equal height share a podium and underground parking, meaning decisions about which tower to live in may be made based on what’s available or a buyer’s preferred view.
Although older buildings are sometimes associated (at least mentally) with a lack of modern amenities, Celebrity Place definitely proves that theory wrong. Residents have access to an indoor swimming pool, library, party room, hobby room, and theatre, as well as a gym and sauna. And squash and basketball players can battle it out for who gets to play on the multi-use court.
Besides entertainment, residents of 77 Maitland also enjoy a balance of safety and convenience. The building features an onsite security guard and a convenience store. And those looking to connect with their neighbours can always help out with the building’s compost and herb gardens.
The Suites
None of the homes at Celebrity Place are palatial in size. The suites range in size from around 500 to approximately 900 square feet, and the majority contain two bedrooms. Some one bedroom homes are also spread throughout the building, and many contain generously sized balconies.
Since the building has been around for so long, a number of units have been upgraded and updated over the years. This provides plenty of variety for prospective buyers who are in the market for Toronto condos for sale and plan to keep an eye on 77 Maitland: DIYers might opt for a unit that hasn’t been changed much, while those ready to move in will prefer the homes that have gone through some renovations already.
The Neighbourhood
Cabbagetown neighbourhood certainly isn’t as bustling as the Entertainment District, but it has a charm that’s matchless elsewhere in Toronto. How can it be anything but charming when it’s surrounded by massive parks and ravines, and filled with heritage buildings that date back to the 19th century? Best of all, residents living at Celebrity Place can still walk to Dundas Square in just 20 minutes, and are just on the border of the vibrant LGBTQ+ Village neighbourhood, with a great variety of shops, restaurants and nightlife.
In terms of entertainment, residents can head around the corner — literally — to catch a live show at the Phoenix Concert Theatre. There’s also the Imagine Cinemas on Carlton for rainy days, while those looking to get in touch with nature can head over to the indoor Allan Gardens Conservatory to check out the plants — rain or shine.
Residents of Celebrity Place even have their pick when it comes to grocery shopping. The building is about equidistant from a Food Basics on Wellesley and the enormous Loblaws inside the historic Maple Leaf Gardens building at Carlton and Church.
Transportation
Traveling to and from 77 Maitland is never an issue, thanks to its proximity to both major roadways and plenty of options for public transit. To start, drivers living at Celebrity Place can escape downtown Toronto by using Jarvis to reach the Gardiner Expressway to the south, and Bloor East or Gerrard to connect to the north-south moving Don Valley Parkway.
Residents without cars, on the other hand, can still explore any pocket of the city. Between streetcars along Carlton, buses up and down Jarvis, and the Yonge subway line, there’s plenty of choice. A walk over to Wellesley or College Stations on the Yonge line takes just around 10 minutes, and from there, travelers can catch trains heading north and south throughout the city.
